Don’t look for bells or whistles to define Eve’s music, just listen. Whatever song you may hear first you’re likely to recognize one or all of her childhood influences, from Joan Armatrading and John Prine to Joan Baez and Paul Simon.
Since moving to Pittsburgh, PA from Nashville, TN in January of 2002 Eve Goodman has found the best of both worlds. Honing her skills as a singer/songwriter in Nashville, Eve had many fortunate experiences including performances with Gillian Welch, Kami Lyle and Lynn Biddick for the popular monthly show, Born to Cook. Now in Pittsburgh to pursue a career as Program Coordinator with the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra) (PYSO), Eve considers herself doubly lucky to be a part Pittsburgh’s vibrant and thriving musical community – an unknown treasure that is a kaleidoscope of genres filled with many talented musicians.
One of the most satisfying experiences for Eve has been her collaboration with these musicians and songwriters. After meeting at a blues jam in Oakland four years ago, Eve paired up with local producer and guitarist John Caldwell. Together they’ve performed at various clubs around town (Club Café, Backstage Bar) and currently host a monthly show at Arefa’s Espresso that in addition to performing their own material features a different local performer each month. They’ve also been busy recording and are happy to showcase five of the songs that will be on Eve’s soon to be released third CD that John Caldwell has produced. (Have a listen now!).
Eve is also one of the original members of The Riveting Rosies. Founded by Stacy Mates and Patti Spinner (Pittsburgh songwriters that sadly had to re-locate to Michigan), the group also includes fellow Pittsburgh songwriters, Heather Kropf, Sue Gartland, Janet Ingram and Tracy Drach. Blending jazz, bluegrass, pop/rock/folk and a lot of humor into each other’s songs the Rosie’s performances are popular events that always pack a room.
Originally a native of Boston, MA, as early as eighteen Eve was hitting the singer/songwriter circuit in New England and New York City where she played at such legendary folk venues as Passim in Cambridge and the SpeakEasy in New York City; opened for such stalwarts as Cheryl Wheeler and Jesse Winchester and shared the stage with Catie Curtis and Tracy Chapman.
Her first self-produced CD, Get to You (1990) received many favorable reviews from Boston newspapers that caught the ears of Columbia, Arista and Polygram Records. Encouraged to move to Nashville, in 1993 Eve hit the road for “Music City” where she quickly became a regular performer in popular music venues including the nationally renowned Bluebird Café.
In 1997, Eve produced a second CD, Beneath the Same Sky comprised of songs written while in Nashville. The album covers a lot of ground; from a country waltz to a swing blues, rockabilly to a confessional folk/rock ballad and features her instrumentals as well as the fine handiwork of some of Nashville’s finest musicians like David Rawlings and Drew Perkins.
On her own or together with John Caldwell or the Riveting Rosies, Eve’s concerts are memorable affairs. She’ll mix her originals with a few well-chosen covers, from a Leadbelly blues to a standard like “Pennies from Heaven.” Her performances are intimate and unaffected, letting the honesty and eloquence of her music do the talking. Whether the tune is biting or bittersweet, she keeps the folk singer/songwriter traditional alive while adding her own personal touch.
